For almost 150 years, MSHS has supported gardeners in Minnesota. The organization started with the early apple growers in the state. It published articles about Victory Gardens during World War II, and was a big part of the effort to create the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. It continues today to provide information, education and inspiration to gardeners, whether beginners or expert.

About 55 percent of the operating expenses of MSHS are covered by subscriptions to Northern Gardener and memberships in the organization. (Thank you to those 10,000 plus garden greats.) The rest of the money to support MSHS programs comes from donations. These are especially important because they help MSHS reach out to new gardeners, young gardeners, low-income gardeners and others who are just beginning to understand the value of home gardening.

Today is #GivingTuesday – a fitting follow up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You can go to our GivingTuesday page to make a donation. For 2015, the hort society has set the goal of raising $150,000 in donations. No matter how small or large, all donations are very appreciated and will be put to use supporting gardeners all over the state.

What programs will you gift support?

  • Garden-in-a-Box provides garden boxes, soil, vegetable plants and instruction to schools and low income families throughout the Twin Cities and around Minnesota. The program helps people develop basic gardening skills as they learn to grow healthy food in small spaces.
  • Minnesota Green distributes over $100,000 each year in donated seeds and plants to community and public space gardens, to help beautify neighborhoods and to provide residents with locally-grown food.
  • Northern Gardener magazine is the only publication edited exclusively for cold climate gardening, and is available in both print and digital editions.
  • Educational programs: a wide variety of classes on specialized gardening topics are offered throughout the year.
  • MSHS Library largest circulating horticultural library in the state.
  • Online www.northerngardener.org is a quick link to a wide range of gardening resources, and this blog, which provides a regular source of information and ideas for cold-climate gardeners.

Thank you for your support!
